According to the No Child Left Behind law, a "highly qualified" teacher is one who:
- has obtained a Bachelor's degree or higher
- has obtained State certification - in Florida that means that the teacher has either a temporary or professional certificate
- has demonstrated competency in ten core academic subject area that he/she teaches by passing a content area test or enough hours to be equivalent to a major.
I, Ioannis Giavaras, have met the certification requirements and I hold a Teaching Certificate from Greece, as well as a Bachelors degree and the American Council on the Teacher of Foreign Languages proficiency certification,
and the ESOL, as well. Also, I have taken the subject area exam and I am highly qualified in the World Language - Greek (Grades K-12) from Florida Department of Education.
I worked as a teacher in public elementary schools in Greece for 18 years. In 2008,
I came to the USA with my family and I worked as a teacher of Greek language in the Holy Cross Parochial School in Brooklyn, NY until 2014.
In 2014 we moved in Florida and since then I work for Plato Academy Largo.
Also, I am a lyricist of Greek songs and many of my lyrics have been performed by famous Greek singers.
In Greece, I had a broadcasting show for two years and I was interviewing famous Greek singers, composers and lyricists. Also, I was the president of a Cultural Association for six years with several activities.
I am a member of the writing team of the Greek Archdiocese of America and I have been participated in the writing of eight text books in Greek language for the Greek American Parochial schools and Charter schools, as well.
